Video Backpack Lets Journalists Roam
Garland Partners' LiveU backpack video journalist system (http://www.gpl-uk.co.uk/liveu.htm) offers users the ability to capture live video from anywhere on the globe as it happens. This real-time video uplink solution means immediate connectivity using the mobile network enabling first-response broadcasts. They offer fast and easy setup without the need for outside broadcast trucks. Using existing wireless 3G/Wi-fi/Wimax networks, the system transfers broadcast-quality video clips at up to 2Mbps.
The system was used by a number of media outlets -- including CBS (which is carrying the game live), TMZ, the NFL Network and local Dallas TV stations -- in Dallas for this year's Super Bowl. The systems are being used to provide TV and online viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the events and parties leading up to the big game. They will also roam around the stadium during game.
The roving videographers are using LiveU's newest technology, the LU60, which provides a proprietary stable signal, supports 720p30/1080i60 HD and 480p SD quality video, and features new video inputs. It measures 25 x 36 x 11.5 cm and weighs less tan 12 pounds (with battery) and offers video preview and an audio level indicator.
Video captured with the LU60 is encoded using the H.264 (MPEG-4) compression and then transmitted to the studio or onsite production truck. The LU60 comes with either SDI or HDMI connections and analog video input interfaces and IEEE 1394 Firewire connectivity. The LU-1000 software on the studio site supports multiple outputs simultaneously, with SDI or analog output.
Powered by either single or dual hot-swappable Anton Bauer and IDX batteries, the LU-60 offers dual SIM cards per GSM modem as an option. This allows the user to switch between working with a local SIM set in its own home country, to a roaming set when traveling. The roaming set may be the recommended LiveU's roaming offering or the user's own portable set.
